Former child star Danielle Spencer has died aged 60 following a long battle with cancer. The actress was best known for playing Dee Thomas on the popular 1970s sitcom "What's Happening!!".

Her death was confirmed by former co-star Haywood Nelson, who played Dwayne on the show. Spencer died on Monday night in a Richmond, Virginia hospital with her family by her side.

Emotional tribute from co-star

Nelson posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, calling Spencer "our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior". He wrote: "Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body."

The tribute continued: "We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer. We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, What's Happening!! cast member, veterinarian, animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine."

Nelson emphasised Spencer's courage during her prolonged suffering, calling her "our Shero" in his heartfelt message. He concluded: "Danielle is loved. She will be missed in this form and forever embraced."

Family present at final moments

According to TMZ, Spencer's mother Cheryl and her brother Jeremy Pelt were present during her final moments at the hospital. Pelt is a jazz musician who stayed close to his sister throughout her illness.

Life beyond acting

After her childhood fame on "What's Happening!!", Spencer transitioned into veterinary medicine and became an animal rights advocate. She earned the title "Dr. Dee" referenced in Nelson's tribute, showing her dedication to healing both animals and people.

The actress had battled cancer for an extended period, demonstrating the same resilience that made her beloved by co-stars and fans alike.
