A multi-agency search operation is underway off Ireland's northwest coast for a missing UK Navy crew member. The sailor was last seen aboard a UK Naval support vessel at approximately 10:30pm on Friday.

The Irish Coast Guard's Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Malin Head received a distress alert from the vessel just before 9am on Saturday. The ship was located north of Tory Island when the alert was raised.

The search area spans the sea between Tory Island in Co Donegal and Eagle Island in Co Mayo. Malin Head Coast Guard is coordinating both air and sea operations to locate the missing crew member.

Search Assets Deployed

Air search operations involve the Coast Guard's fixed-wing plane Rescue 120F from Shannon airport, Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 from Sligo, and the Irish Air Corps plane CASA 284. At sea, the UK Naval support vessel is working alongside three RNLI all-weather lifeboats based at Ballyglass, Arranmore Island, and Lough Swilly.

Ireland's Department of Transport said in a statement: «Malin Head Coast Guard are co-ordinating a search for the missing crew member in the sea off the northwest coast between Tory Island, Co Donegal and Eagle Island, Co Mayo. [...] Other vessels of opportunity are also involved in the search.»
