A 28-year-old man has admitted arson following a devastating fire that completely destroyed a Labour MP's constituency office and vital community services. Joshua Oliver, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty at Newcastle Magistrates' Court to starting the blaze that occurred in the early hours of Thursday.
The fire happened at the office of Sharon Hodgson (Labour), MP for Washington and Gateshead South. Oliver entered his guilty plea on the basis that his actions were reckless rather than intentional, though the Crown did not accept this characterisation.
Widespread damage to local services
The fire completely gutted not only the MP's constituency office but also devastated other vital community services housed in the same building. A small charity supporting people with very rare genetic diseases lost its premises in the blaze.
An NHS mental health service specifically designed for military veterans was also destroyed by the fire. The incident has left multiple organisations scrambling to relocate their operations and continue serving vulnerable community members.
Court proceedings continue
The court heard that Oliver had been living in a tent in the vicinity of the building prior to the incident. District Judge Kate Meek presided over the hearing and remanded Oliver in custody pending his next court appearance.
Oliver is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on October 14 for sentencing. The case will move to the higher court given the serious nature of the charges and the extent of damage caused.
