Two men died after a Cirrus light aircraft crashed into farmland near Littleborough, Rochdale, on Tuesday morning. Greater Manchester Police confirmed no other individuals were on board or injured on the ground. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has launched an investigation.

The Cirrus SR20 departed from Birmingham Airport's XLR Executive Jet Centre around 10am on Tuesday. Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 shows the aircraft travelled for approximately 40 minutes before FlightRadar24 received its last signal south of the M62 motorway near Marsden, West Yorkshire. The crash occurred shortly after 11am.

Chief Superintendent Danny Inglis from Greater Manchester Police's Rochdale district said: "This is a devastating incident where two people have lost their lives and our thoughts are with their families and friends." Police urged witnesses to come forward with information.

Investigation underway

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch deployed a team to the crash site to examine the cause. Images circulating on social media reportedly show a yellow parachute caught on a pylon near the crash location.

The National Grid confirmed it supported emergency services in securing the area. A spokesman said the electricity supply remained unaffected by the incident.
